The man ate like a Hobbit. Willow had never seen someone eat so much in her life. Then again, she supposed one would build up quite the appetite after one hundred and eleventy years. After only twenty-four hours, Montgomery devoured every morsel of food in her kitchen. She even made extra batches of cookies and muffins. Where did he put it all?
When Montgomery polished off the last egg first thing in the morning and then announced he was still hungry, Willow said, âWeâre going to have to eat out today. I donât think I can keep up.â
âOut?â he said with worry in his brow. âNo, it would be best if you went to the market. Can you pick up a ham while youâre there?â
âItâs Sunday. And on Sundays, I donât cook or work. Itâs my only day off.â
âSo, you will order on the phone? Like you did when the Chinese food came?â
âNo. I need to get out of this place for a while. And I think we should probably take you shopping for some new clothes.â
âYou do remember what happened last time I tried to walk through that door.â
âThat was before you grew a whole body.â
âWe donât know the rules. I could get thrown into another dimension.â
They had spent the entire evening puzzling over the miracle of Montgomeryâs corporal awakening and came up blank. Willow even chanced conjuring a mirror charm to contact Esme for help. She did not crack the mirror, and there was no black smoke, thank the Fates. And of course her sisters Ivy and Bliss ran to the mirror to take a peek behind Esmeâs shoulders at the man who might or not be still a ghost. It was quite thrilling and perplexing to all four of the witches, but no matter how many books they searched through that night, there was no indication something like this had ever happened before. They ended the night more confused than ever, and Esme made Willow promise sheâd bring her ghostman to visit.
âWeâre exploring new territory here. Anything can happen at any time.â Willow wrapped her hand around Montgomeryâs and squeezed. âIâll go through the door with you and I promise Iâll hold on tight.â
Montgomery squeezed back. âDonât let go.â
âI wonât let go.â
Willow stood up taking Montgomery with her and walked right up to the front door. âReady?â
âNot even a little bit.â
âNo time like the present. On three. One, two⦠oh wait. I almost forgot my purse.â She let go of him momentarily, leaving him at the door clutching his chest.
âThe property records said I died of consumption? Are you sure it wasnât angina?â
âJust breathe. And close your eyes.â Willow took his hand again and led him to the threshold, edging the tips of their toes right up to the doorway.
âI gotcha, boo,â said Willow, and for good luck, she raised up on her tippy toes and kissed him on the cheek.
His surprise and delight set him in a blissful daze when Willow leapt through the door, pulling him along with her.
